As a result of ongoing prosecution against the long time WTF President and IOC-Vice-President Dr. Un Yong Kim has resigned from his position of WTF-President on Friday, Jan. 9th 2004. He also gave up his presidency of Kukkiwon but remained IOC-Vice-President so far.
The accusations against Dr. Kim included allegations of having collected illicit money from former South Korean Olympic officials and having embezzled funds from taekwondo organizations. His private home has been searched and several material including large sums of money have been seized. An investigation has been launched to find out the origin of the money and to clarify the accusations that have been brought up.
IOC also has taken measures to clear the situation by asking its Ethics Committee to investigate. With the resignation of Dr. Un Yong Kim for the World Taekwondo Federation a story of three decades has come to an end. Stormy times seem to lie ahead for one of the largest sports organizations in the world.
